In Sunland Derby (G3) held in March of the previous year, Mucho Gusto burned out on the lead. Therefore, the trainer Bob Baffert decided to lower the expectations imposed on the 3-year-old colt. This decision of the trainer made him avoid the Triple Crown in favor of the lower level races that were held back at home in California.

The son of Mucho Gusto’s trainer won two races with much ease; one was the Lazaro Barrera (G3) and the other Affirmed (G3). The boy’s path changed when Mucho Gusto got the better off from his last start pace.

When Baffert was asked to comment on the laying back matter he said that Mucho Gusto cannot just go on and on without getting time to relax. We cannot expect him to go out there and perform just the way he did in Sunland Park. As there was no other way to move and he was just the one in the hole, everything paced really fast and fell apart at the top stretch. He also added to his statement that Mucho Gusto has never run a bad race and has returned with two solid races now. Also, he has been very consistent with his performance.

At Santa Anita Park, Mucho Gusto drilled for about six furlongs that took place for more than an hour, this Thursday morning. Now, he is to be bound for the 2019 Haskell Invitational that is about to commence from 20th of July.

This news was taken into consideration only after Baffert accepted the lower-level type of spots, which was lucrative though referring to the Iowa Derby held this Friday. The Hall of the Famer said that on horses like Mucho Gusto swinging for 1 million dollars can be less, when they are really doing so well going for the fences shall be no big deal.

The prospective field where the upcoming Haskell race shall be conducted is quite top-heavy, and therefore, the officials of Monmouth Park invited around 52 horses. The list starts with the Derby winner from Kentucky, King for a day, the horse who defeated King in Pegasus Stakes conducted in the previous month, and Joevia who bagged the third position in Belmont Stakes.

Baffert stated that they are trying to get a piece of Mucho Gusto as they think he is maturing now. He also added that Mucho Gusto has been a late foal.
